Dr Zhao interests are in the general area of design and manufacturing, including the exploration of new design methods, manufacturing informatics to support Industry 4.0, sustainable product development and adaptation of artificial intelligent tools for cognitive manufacturing. Her research program is focused on three central and connected themes: 1) Sustainable Manufacturing; 2) Additive Manufacturing, and 3) Industry 4.0. The first aims are to develop sustainability analysis methods and material databases, to establish information and process models and metrics, and to analyze end-of-life product reuse/recycling methods. The second aim is to explore new design methods, materials, and tools to support innovative part/product design to fully utilize the potential enabled by additive manufacturing technology. The third theme focuses on investigating and adapting artificial intelligent and machine learning tools for design and manufacturing applications to achieve the next level of intelligent manufacturing.
